The Environment of Russian Arctic Area
Abstract Introduction
Before I started to write this research proposal paper, I didn’t know about the arctic area especially Russian arctic because Russia is not close to my country and they used to have different a government system that is communism. So I had had any chance to get information about both Russia and Russian arctic. While I have found out some articles about a problem of Russian arctic, I was getting being interested in Russian arctic and I have recognized how much is it important thing for human beings to live on the earth. During people didn’t consider to consume a huge amount of fossil fuels that cause global warming, ice cap of the arctic area have lost more and more gradually without a special warning.
Russia that is nearby the arctic area is increasing the consumption of natural resource such as coal, gas, and oil to be more industrialized. Eventually a process of the consumption has emitted plenty of harmful chemical substances such as “Carbon Dioxide” cause increasing temperature of the earth. To solve this problem Russian has to have corporate the international effort and try to keep Russian arctic themselves.
Losing of Ice Cap of The Arctic Area
Until about one hundred years ago we don’t need to worry about arctic area problem even we didn’t know whether or not there exist arctic area to public. But nowadays we cannot ignore this problem that is related to the arctic area any more. After many industrialized countries all over the world we have had a lot of advantages and benefits from developing industry but this causes huge exhausting of nonrenewable energy such as oil, coal, and natural gas. People just focused on how can be a more developing country and how we can improve and have bigger infrastructure that use a lot of energy be cause harmful chemical substances that can damage the surroundings of the earth. Eventually human beings have been confronted by many serious situation as a result of we didn’t care about the effect of develop industry. One of the biggest problems is the global warming from assuming much energy without any care and considering. Even though this problem that is increasing temperature of the earth can be effect all of the world, some of the countries have to concern and research about it. Around the arctic area there are some close countries such as Russia, Iceland, and the United States but especially I want to mention the arctic area of Russia because this country has a very wide space out of the arctic area and very close to it even Russia is producing uncountable amount of harmful substances to the arctic area as a result of increasing cars and plants. As long as we don’t prepare and try to solve the arctic area’s problem that ice cap of the arctic area is getting smaller because of chemical substances from consuming nonrenewable energy, mainly fossil fuels. To protect from losing ice cap and increasing global warming we must do something from right now. A government of Russia should have clear methods to keep the Russian arctic and to prevent worse of global warming. I think there are three things that people should do start to do something to keep Russian arctic now. First, the government of Russia and others have to try to diminish to use natural resources not to increase producing chemical substances especially carbon dioxide. Second, the research should continue to check up state of arctic area’s environment. Third, People should be educated how much important this issue.
Firstly, even though we must reduce using of fossil fuels not to make the situation of losing ice cap of the arctic area worse, there are too many different and difficult conditions of both more developed countries and low developed countries. More developed and having more economic power countries usually depend on their infrastructure as assuming huge amounts of fossil fuels to produce their products to export to other countries and to consume in a country. On the other hand, less developed countries almost depend on coal or biomass materials to have fire resource to maintain their living-style. Eventually both of them have produced a plenty of tragically harmful chemical substances that are one of the most importantly “ Carbon dioxide” to effect melting ice cap of arctic area. This is the most outstanding factor to effect (Climate change. Para.3). Even there are some activities to explore to dig oil and gas of the arctic area by Russia (Russian Energy Strategy Program Calls for Tapping Arctic Area. Para.3). Russia should focus on protecting there more than finding natural resources in the Russian arctic shelf because the condition of the Russian arctic belongs to environmental problems of the world. Prior of developing the Russian arctic shelf, the government of Russia have to make appropriate laws to protect there and have willing to prevent from unconsidered explores.
Secondly, to prevent a tragic condition that global warming is getting worse, Russia should study and research in the arctic area continuously. Fortunately there are much more activities to do it in the world than the past. By the article in RIA NOVOSTI, “ ST. PETERSBURG, March 24 (RIA. NOVOSTI Northwest correspondent Anna Novak) – A session in honor of the Arctic and Antarctic Scientific Research Institute’s 85th anniversary will take place on Thursday in ST Petersburg. The history of the Institute began on March 4, 1920 when a Northern Scientific Industrial expedition was organized. Five years later it was reorganized as the Institute of Northern Studies. In 1930, it was renamed the All – Russian Arctic Research Institute and became a center for studying the Russian Arctic, ensuring the requirements of navigation along the Northern Sea Route and of other branches of the national economy in the extreme North” (ARCTIC AND ANTARCTIC INSTITUTE TURN 85. Para. 1,4). In Kyoto, Japan, in 1997 there was a summit to reduce to emit Carbon Dioxide world widely. Even though many countries tried to make this international meeting successfully, it couldn’t make a result because some countries that against to sign up. But it just needs Russian ratification to come into force. The government of Russia should sign up it as soon as they can because it’s not involved in Russia it is one of the biggest problems of the world by BBC News in “WHAT IS THE KYOTO TREATY?” Like these there are some effort to protect and research environmental condition of the arctic area as how much it is changing comparing with the past and to what kind of effect would we have to the future if we don’t try to keep not to be worse. Though the research by the experts we can predict and evaluate periodically. But it wouldn’t be enough to study the artic area as long as each country doesn’t want to reduce their consuming of fossil fuel that cause carbon dioxide.
Lastly, people who live in Russia should know and be educated how much important this problem for human beings. If Russia can educate people who don’t be interested in and want to be concerned, they could be changed after being educated about the environmental problem of the arctic area. There are many studies and research that have to be known to public for example, “ The arctic ice cap is melting at an unprecedented rate, with potentially dire consequences for the rest of the world, according to one of the most authoritative studies on global climate change.” Another one is “ Arctic ice is only half as thick as it was 30years ago, the arctic climate impact assessment report has found. During the same period the distribution of arctic ice has shrunk by 10 percent according to the report, conducted by more than 250 scientists over the past four years and commissioned by the arctic council.” The public doesn’t know about clear statistics and effect of these even some of them don’t know what these mean so they don’t feel to consider and be interested in these problem. To prevent and improve of these people should be given information by the government and institutes of Russia. So long as Russia is just about to develop the economy without any appropriate standard laws to protect their arctic area and warning to aware people who resident in Russia, the condition of arctic area would be getting worse.
Consequently, there are many things to do people both of them who live in Russia and other countries and each government of all over the world. Firstly, there would never be improvement of losing ice cap of the arctic area without any effort to reduce using fossil fuels that cause carbon dioxide. Secondly, to predict the condition of the arctic area Russia should support the experts who study the arctic area and institutes of both their own and the international. Thirdly, Russia tries to educate and give information about environment of the arctic area to public to increase people’s awareness. Without these effort there wouldn’t be any successful result to keep the arctic area safely.
